You’ve started to design your new home build, woohoo how exciting! BUT what has been considered as part of your planning? More than just how fancy your house will look right?…
We understand the excitement of cracking into what your dream home will look like, however, we are going to play devil’s advocate and point out a few things to consider as well. Because the better you can plan the easier the whole process will feel.
So, we’ve narrowed it down to four of our main considerations, to make it super simple for you and to make it helpful for the team you choose to work with.
Now let’s get into the 4 tips that can help make planning your new home build design easier.
1. Begin with a clear vision
Do you have a vision board? Is there a list of must-haves? Have you been creating boards upon boards on Pinterest? GOOD! Getting clear on what you are after is a must. Especially if you are thinking boho chic, with a dash of modern sleek, and then a smidge of rustic farmhouse. We want you to get super clear on what you can see your house looking like. Right down to the door handles up to the light fixtures.
Why is this all important? As we mentioned above if you can see your house looking like three different vibes, well you may walk into problems later down the track. So, we want you to get super specific and clear to avoid any of those problems.
There is no stopping you from having elements from different designs, but think about how they will work together. Do you want a large rustic roller barn door, but the surroundings are of a more sleek modern fashion? Then cater it into your planning, so it’s not left to interpretation.
This is where we would recommend trying some of the following activities to get the most crystal clear idea of your home:
- Consider your lifestyle = Do you prefer large open spaces to host big gatherings or do you prefer smaller living spaces for something a little more intimate?
- What’s your aesthetic = Do you love white on white or white with dark features? Or are you someone who loves an entirely dark moody vibe?
- Vision board = If you haven’t already created one, look at creating a digital format (we recommend Pinterest), and start pulling images from house styles and designs you love, right down to the paint colour. Also, great to refer to over the project duration.
- Have conversations = Make sure you talk with the main stakeholders first and then talk to people you trust and know your style, as they may have ideas that you didn’t consider or help cement things that you were unsure of.
2. Work with the experts
We know it’s so much fun doing it yourself but working with the pros in this area will only benefit your home design.
Like you are an expert in what you do for a living, so are the people who do this for a living. They’ve been around the block and know what works and doesn’t. Plus they are up with the latest trends and can provide better or more cost-effective solutions to your ideas.
At Lavish Homes we only work with the best and that’s why we offer a FREE colour consult with Appletree Designs when you build your home with us. As we know how important it is to ensure you get every aspect right.
So, keep an open mind when planning your new home build design, as you might get some ideas that elevate your home.
3. Keep functionality front of mind
Having an Instagram drool-worthy home is great, but it’s not the be-all and end-all. The house needs to serve its function as well.
You create a huge open living space, more than you need, which then creates a large room to heat and can create sound issues.
The kitchen is stunning and perfect, but as soon as you cook the bench is stained by your favourite dish.
All of these small things need to be considered, as what you see in photos might not serve the life you like to lead.
So, while you are dreaming of that picture-perfect home, add some of the following into your daydreaming:
- High-traffic areas = These are rooms like your kitchen or lounge. Are they easily accessible and make logical placement sense?
- Storage = Don’t forget where you want to store your prized possessions, especially if you are after a minimalist finish. So, consider built-in shelves, cabinets, or wardrobes and whether you want them visible or discreetly hidden away.
- Future plans = Are you looking at growing your family? Have you just started working for yourself? Are you making space for aging parents? These should also be considered.
4. Think sustainability
The world’s population is becoming more and more aware of what impact it has on our environment. Planning your dream home should also have this consideration. As it can reduce your carbon footprint, but can also provide you with long-term cost savings and result in a healthier home.
There are so many options available now from eco-friendly materials right through to energy-efficient technologies that can be incorporated into your home design.
This is where chatting with the experts is key, as they can help guide you to whether you should consider solar panels or smart home technologies.
Then consider what type of landscaping you desire and consult with the pros as to whether it will work with your climate.
There are so many other elements we could have gone into, but we think these four will help with keeping your expectations in check, allow you to consider whether you have the budget for it, future-proof your home, and give you and your chosen team a great start point for planning your new home build.
